Leadership Donelson-Hermitage

Since August 2008 I have participated with 27 other participants in Leadership Donelson-Hermitage. This is a community based organization that provides participants with insights into how the Donelson Hermitage community functions and provides opportunities to meet and network with other community leaders. Visits to Donelson, Hermitage, and Nashville points of interest offer participants an insider view of the community’s cultural and organizational structures. Class days include presentations by community leaders, and training in leadership skills, teamwork, and group development. Leadership is a vital component in the success and economic future of the Donelson-Hermitage area and Leadership Donelson-Hermitage is an integral part of such leadership development.

As a part of this years program three teams worked together to create, plan and execute three separate community based service projects using volunteer effort and resources only. The Extreme Green Team was the group I participated with and our project was the re-cycle day that was held at the Hermitage Police Precinct in late April. This past Tuesday evening, June 2, our graduation ceremony was conducted at the Hermitage Visitor Center and as new alumni; we are now committed to planning program days for the Class of 2010 and to a continuing involvement for at least a 3 year period.

Sub Area 14 Plan

Beginning in February the Planning Commission hosted a series of meetings at McGavock High School for the purpose of discussing the future of Downtown Donelson and the Lebanon Road Corridor from Briley Parkway to Stewarts Ferry Pike. The last of the four meeting was held on May 21 and as a result of community input the process will continue with the goal of creating an Urban Design Overlay (UDO) for what will be identified as the Lebanon Road Re-development Corridor (LRRC).

ImageIn order to create the possibility for mixed used de-development which is not possible at the present time with the current CS and CL zoning, an amendment will be made to the cities Adaptive Reuse Policy to include the LRRC and thus allow for residential development in the existing base zoning categories. In addition, a UDO will be created to insure certain reasonable design standards are followed in the years to come as re-development of LRRC properties occur.

Gateway Project Update

Girl Scout Troop 983 Recently, Girl Scout Troop 983 donated their time and $100 of their hard earned cookie money to plant a bed of beautiful flowers at the Donelson Branch Library as a part of the Gateway Project. The Troop is a home school Troop under the leadership of Lisa Kersey and is made up of Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors. Their number is 25 girls who range in age from 6-17. This is just another example of how all parts of the community is working together to make Donelson a nicer place to live.
